Established in 1883, the building has been renovated to state of the art technology that is used to help visitors interpret the works of art. The recent addition of the Target wing in 2006 added 40% more space to the facility and included a new library, community room, and reception hall. Admission is FREE. Hours are The museum is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and July 4. The museum is located one mile south of downtown Minneapolis at the intersection of 3rd Avenue South and East 24th Street. (see map) The MIA is readily accessible by Metro Transit bus. Free parking is available in the ramps south of the Institute on 3rd Avenue as well as the lot northeast of the 24th Street and 3rd Avenue intersection.
